In 1984 he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize and, in 1995, President Nelson Mandela named him as Chair of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. Portrait of My Mother, Bridge, Ann
8 Bridge, Ann Portrait of My Mother
London Chatto and Windus 1955 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall
Gold title on red block on green cloth boards which are unmarked with no wear. Internally there is a decorative bookplate to front pastedown and light foxing to closed edges else very clean, tight and unmarked. 254 pages. 8 illustrations. Selective pedigree of the Day family - 1604 to 1954. In this unusual book Ann Bridge traces her Mother's youth in America through her own childhood and later recollections of what she heard, both from her Mother herself, and from the troops of vivid American relations who came to England to stay in the ample country house where she was brought up. Ann Bridge's Mother, Marie Day of New Orleans, ws the daughter of a slave-owner and brought up by slaves; her memories go back to the American Civil War and the bitter years after it, and throw an entrancing - and accurate - light on a place and period that has often been treated with more glamour than accuracy. It is all seen through the eyes of the little English girl, seeking the reality that was her Mother's life in another generation and another continent. Marie Day's forebearsincluded such famous American characters as Captain Elisha Hinman and his doughty wife Abigail, of Benedict Arnold fame; but the reader first learns of them when small children at play re-enact the siege of New London in an English garden looking across to Windsor Castle. There is much vivid American history, including original material preserved in the Day family and hitherto unpublished.

Hermit in Paris - Autobiographical Writings, Calvino, Italo
10 Calvino, Italo Hermit in Paris - Autobiographical Writings
London Jonathan Cape 2003 0224061321 / 9780224061322 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall
A clean and unmarked copy with dustjacket which is not price clipped and has marks to back. First edition, first printing. 255 pages. Translated from the Italian by Martin McLaughlin. Italo Calvino (1923-1985) was an Italian journalist and writer of short stories and novels, lionised in Britain and the United States, he was the most-translated contemporary Italian writer at the time of his death, and a noted contender for the Nobel Prize for Literature. The pieces collected here range from the early 1950's to his last interview just before his sudden death. Apart from shedding light on his own formative experience and evolution as an author, his writings also examine the major events of 20th century history from a very personal viewpoint: his memories of Fascism in San Remo in the 1930's, his participation in the Resistance in the Ligurian hills in the 1940's, his militant communism in the early 1950's, and his exit from the Italian Communist Party in 1957. Included is a previously unpublished travelogue recounting his visit on a Ford Foundation Grant to the USA in 1960, and his encounters with key figures of the time including Martin Luther King. His evocative homage to his adopted city, Paris, where he lived from 1967-1980 gives title to the book.
