Utopia and A Dialogue of Comfort, More, Thomas
11 More, Thomas Utopia and A Dialogue of Comfort
London Heron 1960's Hard Fine 8vo - over 7
A Fine unmarked copy with gold decoration on brown leatherette boards. Page marker bound in. xix + 428 pages. Portrait frontispiece. More's classic work consists of two books, the second written abroad in 1515 and the first a year later after his return to England. It is in the form of a dialogue between the author and Raphael Hythloday, an imaginary traveller who has visited strange lands. The first book is critical and presents a picture of English social life at the beginning of the 16th century, on the eve of the Reformation, where tyranny and corruption abound. In the second book we are shown the opposite picture of an ideal society. The Dialogue of Comfort was written by More in 1534 whilst in the Tower of London awaiting martyrdom. Two Hungarians discuss an impending invasion by the Turks, who here represent the Catholic Church. The younger man is fearful lest the persecutions which follow may cause him to compromise his faith. The dialogue affords us a vision of More's own soul beset with doubts and fears in the dark night before his supreme sacrifice.
