A fascinating work on collecting paper money, or notaphily to give its proper name, which presents an interesting history of paper money, including 'oddities' - the playing card money was Canada's first paper currency issued in 1665, Robert Owen's Labour Notes which circulated in England in 1833 for values calculated in hours, the real prize for notaphilists is the 14th century Ming Dynasy note printed on mulberry bark. The central section of the book is an alphabetical guide to the paper currencies of the world, existing and defunct, and there are sections on how to start a collection.

He applies this to the past and present across all areas such as science, politics, economics, the environment et al.

Dark green title and decoration on olive green cloth boards which have a few minor marks to front and a little wear to spine head and tail. Internally there is a name and date crossed out and another name and date and 'Jerusalem' written on front pastedown, age darkening to closed edges, light foxing to endpapers and to a few front and rear pages else clean, tight and unmarked. First published in 1874. The author states that the Vocabulary, which forms part of the book, has existed in manuscript for many years. It is one of several vocabularies of various dialects of the Gypsy tongue, made by him in different countries. The most considerable - that of the dialect of the Zincali or Rumijelies (Romany Chals) of Spain - was published in 1841. Amongst those which remain unpublished is one of the Transylvanian Gypsy, made principally at Kolosvar in 1844. George Borrow was a gifted linguist who had a particular affinity with the Gypsy culture and language. **** NOT EX LIB ****
