In 1902, he became a teacher of the ballet school. In 1909, Sergei Diaghilev invited Fokine to become the choreographer of his Ballets Russes in Paris. However, Fokine broke off the collaboration in 1912, jealous of Diaghilev's close association with Vaslav Nijinsky. Fokine's years with Ballet Russes were successful, collaborating with other artists to create 'Scheherazade'. Cyril Beaumont details his life and his ballet productions.

Men Dancing - Performers and Performances, Bland, Alexander and Percival, John
12 Bland, Alexander and Percival, John Men Dancing - Performers and Performances
London Weidenfeld and Nicolson 1984 0297780735 / 9780297780731 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Near Fine Folio - over 12" - 15" tall
A near Fine unmarked copy with near Fine dustjacket which is not price clipped. A very large format volume of 176 pages. Profusely illustrated. This book celebrates one of the biggest comebacks in the history of the arts. The most striking post-war development in the world of the arts has been the emergence of dance as a popular art form; and the most striking development in the world of dance has been the re-emergence of the male dancer. The two phenomena are not unconnected. Originating as an activity for men, dance has been dominated for over a century by women. Though admired and envied, these remote ethereal creatures were too far from ordinary life to become the subjects of general interest; they were the precious idols of a select few. The picture now is radically different. The book analyses the role of man in dance. It sketches the historical background and examines, for the first time, the different qualities, both physiological and psychlogical, that make up the various types of dancer. It presents a gallery of the finest artists, all vividly illustrated, giving attention to many from all over the world and through the ages, but concentrating on those extraordinary dancers like Nureyev and Baryshnikov. The Tragedy of Nijinsky, Bourman, Anatole

London Robert Hale 1938 Hard Cover Very Good No Jacket 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall
Red cloth boards have age darkening to spine, a little wear to spine head and tail and gentle bumping to lower corner tips. Internally there is age toning to closed edges else very clean, tight and unmarked. 320 pages. 12 illustrations including an unpublished photograph of Vaslaw Fomitch Nijinsky taken in his practice costume at Krasnoe Selo immediately after his graduation from the Imperial Russian Ballet School in 1908. Third impression April 1938 ( first was May 1937). Anatole Bourman entered the Russian Imperial Ballet School at the same time as Nijinsky and became one of his closest friends, and for many years followed his development and career, first as a member of the Imperial Ballet, and later as star of Diaghilev's Ballets Russes. He tells the part of Nijinsky's story which other biographers have left untold - his youthful ambitions and defeats, his brilliant rise to fame, his exploits with other students, the almost incredible ill fortune which followed him from the first. In Search of Diaghilev, Buckle, Richard
15 Buckle, Richard In Search of Diaghilev
London Sidgwick and Jackson 1955 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Good 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall

The Diaghilev Exhibition, which Richard Buckle organised for the Edinburgh Festival of 1954, and which the Observer transferred to Forbes House in London, where its run was twice extended will go down to history as one of the most remarkable exhibitions of all time. The huge collection of stage designs for the Diaghilev Ballet, the portraits of Diaghilev's collaborators and friends, the old costumes, the caricatures, the scores, the books, the programmes, the music which echoed through the halls and the imaginative decor in which exhibits were displayed, all combined to make an unforgettable impression on the visitor. It is to provide a souvenir of this great show that Richard Buckle has written this book and selected nearly 200 illustrations for it. The book is the story of the exhibition but also something more. In travelling about, visiting old friends of Diaghilev - Picasso, Jean Cocteau, Alexandre Benois, Larionov, Gontcharova, Boris Kochno, Karsavina, Lopokova, Lifar, Dolin, Grigoriev and Sokolova, Buckle discovered a number of new portraits and documents of the golden age of ballet.

Dancers, Crickmay, Anthony
17 Crickmay, Anthony Dancers
New York William Morrow 1982 0688012396 / 9780688012397 First Edition Hard Cover Fine Near Fine Folio - over 12" - 15" tall
A Fine unmarked copy with near Fine dustjacket which is not price clipped. A very large format volume of 97 pages. Introduction by Andrew Porter. 'Crickmay has the true dance photographer's gift that Kirstein described as 'suggesting previous and subsequent action', writes Andrew Porter in his introduction to this selection of Crickmay's dance photographs from the last two decades. This is indeed a gift, for dance is the most transitory of of the arts, an image dependent on the choreographer and the character of the particular dancer. Thus a Giselle of today is not the Giselle of 1841 whereas the score of a symphony or the text of a play remain unchanged, if open to interpretation. This is where the talent of a photographer of the calibre of Anthony Crickmay becomes invaluable. Not only does he capture a precise moment in the dance but he manages to extract the essentials of a dance in a single photographic image. This is done with meticulous attention to a composition - whether in the theatre or the studio, of ensembles or individuals - and to the technicalities of timing, lighting and printing. As with the choreographer there must be close collaboration between subject and creator. This book gives us a unique record of the two arts - of dance from 1960 to 1980 and of the art of dance photography. London Routledge and Kegan Paul 1981 0710008805 / 9780710008800 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Near Fine 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall
a near Fine unmarked copy (Fine apart from a little age toning to page edges) with near Fine dustjacket which is not price clipped. A large format volume of 245 photographs and illustrations. The authors sought not to present a history of the theatre and its productions, an enterprise which would require a series of substantial volumes, but an evocation of its past and present. They have chosen to use, for the most part, visual images rather than the written word, partly because they are more immediate, but partly because they wished to portray the theatre by means of a family album. The pages show some of the great artists who have appeared there, the landmarks of its history, and to indicate something of the role it has come to assume both in the culture of the nation and internationally.
