Norman Rockwell - Artist and Illustrator, Buechner, Thomas S.
7 Buechner, Thomas S. Norman Rockwell - Artist and Illustrator
New York Harry N. Abrams 1970 0810904527 / 9780810904521 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good Elephant Folio - over 15" - 23" tall
A near Fine unmarked copy with Very Good+ dustjacket. A very large heavy volume of 328 pages - 44 x 32 centimetres. 614 illustrations including 111 in full colour. 'Norman Rockwell's subject is average America. He has painted it with such benevolent affection for so many years that a truly remarkable history has been compiled. Through wars, depression, civil strife, and the exploration of space, he has drawn subjects from the everyday happenings of which most lives are made. Millions of people have been moved by his picture stories about the awkardness of youth and the comforts of age, about pride in country, history, and heritage, about reverence, loyalty, and compassion. The virtues that he admires are very popular, and because he illustrates them using familiar people in familiar settings with wonderful accuracy, he describes the American Dream'. These words from Thomas S. Buechner, distinguished director of the Brooklyn Museum, explain Rockwell's enduring charm. And this volume, with its superb reproductions, including two-, three-, and even four-page spreads and foldouts in full colour, finally does justice to an artist whose works have most often been seen only in the impermanent mediums of magazines and calendars. The author discusses Rockwell's life and career, from his early training, through the development of his mature style, to his interest in the major social issues; particularly fascinating is the section devoted to the artist's technique, detailing the steps that may be involved from the first rough-idea sketch to the finished painting. A full index of the works by category helps to make the volume an invaluable addition to the history of American illustration. Speaking Back - The Free Speech Versus Hate Speech Debate, Gelber, Katharine
17 Gelber, Katharine Speaking Back - The Free Speech Versus Hate Speech Debate
Amsterdam John Benjamins Publishing 2002 9027226911 / 9789027226914 First Edition Hard Cover Fine No Jacket 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall
A Fine unmarked copy in laminated boards free from inscriptions. As new. ix + 176 pages. Discourse Approaches to Politics, Society and Culture Series that investigate from a linguistic/discourse-analytic point of view. The book proposes an original policy framework for addressing hate speech. Gelber argues that a policy designed to provide support to affected groups and communities to enable them to speak back when hate speech occurs, is more useful way of addressing the harms of hate speech than punitive measures. She suggests that 'speaking back' allows the affected groups to contradict the messages contained in the words of the hate speakers, and to counteract the silencing, disempowering and marginalising effects of hate speech. Her argument uniquely synthesises the ideas of defending the importance of participating in speech, recognising the harms of hate speech and acknowledging that targeted groups may require assistance to respond.
