The Limits of Science, Medawar, Peter
51 Medawar, Peter The Limits of Science
Oxford Oxford University Press 1985 0192177443 / 9780192177445 Hard Cover Fine Very Good 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall
A Fine unmarked copy with near Fine dustjacket which is not price clipped. The author, Sir Peter Medawar (1915-1987), won the 1960 Nobel Prize for Medicine and in this small book he addresses the largest questions mankind can pose. How did everything begin? Where do we come from? What is the point of living? Does God exist? He seeks to define the limits of science and to separate what happens within them from what must remain beyond. His central purpose is to exculpate science from the reproach that it is quite unable to answer ultimate questions such as these and argues that the charge is 'no more sensible than to reproach a locomotive for not flying'. Metaphysics, imaginative literature, or religion must try and fill the gap, within its limits, though, science is in principle equal to any demand that can be made on it. The book is completed by two shorter pieces - the first is a chapter of aphoristic paragraphs on the character of science and scientific truth - the second asks whether scientific discovery can be premeditated. All these explorations are illuminated by Sir Peter's extraordinary ability to make high science understandable to anybody, and enlivened by his witty and highly literate writing.
