A passenger in the coach, enraged at finding himself in a ' one eyed hole of a place', makes friends with a colonel and his guests and ends up disappearing, later to be found buried on an island. Set in the quiet village of Little Turnpike in Surrey, split in two by the railway line, where the quickest way from one side of the village to the other is a short cut up the embankment one side, a scramble across the railway line, and down the embankment on the other side. On an early morning in late October, the trunk of a man is found, he had been decapitated, and his head discovered further down the track, indicating an accidental death.
