Pandit, S.A. From Making to Music - THe History of Thorn EMI London Hodder and Stoughton 1996 0340680458 / 9780340680452 First Edition Hard Cover Fine Fine A Fine unmarked copy with Fine dustjacket which is not price clipped. First edition, first printing. x + 270 pages. 34 illustrations. Thorn EMI was formed in 1980 as a result of the acquisition of the leading entertainment company, EMI, by one of the UK's largest manufacturer, with the aim to create an enterprise integrating entertainment software, the manufacture of consumer electronics and high technology. This ambition proved hard to realise and in subsequent years, critical decisions, such as a failed bid for British Aerospace and the acquisition of micro-chip manufacturer Inmos, weakened the company. In 1985, following a management change, the company abandoned its strategy of diversification, and Thorn EMI was ruthlessly pruned and over 100 businesses with combined sales of more than 2.6 billion Pounds were sold. Concentrating on music, music retailing and rental, the companies were demerged into two independent ones. In charting the history, the author highlights the demise of Britain's manufacturing industry and the emergence of the service sector. Price:
