1 Burgess, Alan Daylight Must Come - The Story of Dr. Helen Roseveare
London Michael Joseph 1975 0718109996 / 9780718109998 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Good
Gold title on brown boards which have a small mark to back else clean with no wear. Internally clean, tight and unmarked. Dustjacket has a little edge wear and a small stain to back and is price clipped. 279 pages. 24 illustrations. Map endpapers. Arriving in the Congo in 1953, Dr. Helen Roseveare started her own hospital and medical centre from a disused leper colony, and set up clinics in lonely villages. During the crises in 1960 and 1964, she refused to leave the country, although many of her friends and colleagues had been brutally slaughtered. The most astounding part of her story is that, having endured terror, humiliation, rape and split-second escape from death, she would , after a few months back home in England, choose to return to resume her work in the Congo. Today, the central station she founded, with its flying doctors, teaching school and operating theatres, is unique in Africa. **** NOT EX LIB ****
