Dustjacket has wear along the top edge and a small tear to front top edge. A very large format volume of 96 pages. 41 black and white and 40 colour illustrations. Uniform with Twentieth-Century Masters series. The work of Jackson Pollock released art in the United States from its long European bondage. Pollock's art was indisputably American in style, form and content and was clearly the work of a genius and though, like allrevolutionary innovations, it provoked immediate controversy. In the 1940's Pollock became a leader of Abstract Expressionism, although he had begun as a romantic realist influenced by, among others, Thomas Hart Benton. The influence of Picasso and the Surrealists, of Jungian psychology, of Mexican revolutionary painters like Sigueiros, of American regional artists and perhaps most significantly, of the sand painting of the Navaho Indians, all played their part in the germination of Pollock's art.
