This first biography of Fuller by Brigadier Trythall sheds new light on Fuller's many friends and acquaintances, among them Haig, Churchill, Mosley, Ironside, Churchill and Liddell Hart. Major-General J.F.C. Fuller (1878-1966) was one of the most original and creative thinkers on military philosophy, a prolific writer mostly on military or historical topics, as well as on widely differing subjects such as yoga and American civilisation. He served as a subaltern in the Boer War, edited an occult journal with the notorious Aleister Crowley while a TA adjutant in Edwardian London, was the brains of the Tank Corps in the First World War, and after it developed, with Liddell Hart, the concept of armoured warfare which led to Blitzkrieg. In the 1920's he tried to mechanise and reform the British Army from within and in doing so offended almost the entire military establishment, and was retired in 1933 without ever actually filling a Major-General's post. He visited Mussolini's war in Abyssinia and Franco's in Spain, became involved in the British fascist movement and was under surveillance by MI5 in 1941.
