Askew, Reginald Muskets and Altars - Jeremy Taylor and the Last of the Anglicans London Mowbray 1997 0264674308 / 9780264674308 First Edition Hard Cover Fine Fine A Fine unmarked copy with Fine dustjacket.xii + 212 pages. At the end of the English Civil War, Jeremy Taylor (1613-1667) the most famous of the Caroline Divines, wrote for defeated Royalists. His books 'Holy Living' and 'Holy Dying' were instant sucesses. On the battlefield, Cambridge piety and classical learning had been pruned into prayer as sharp as a pike, by a scholar who enlisted as an army padre. Immediately after the execution of Charles I, the Church of England faced destruction, and Taylor's proposals for how an Anglican must exist without it are urgent and exhilarating. In the Anglican calendar, Jeremy Taylor's feast day is 13th August. Price:
