Lady Dilke was remembered as the woman who, when Sir Charles Dilke was cited as co-respondent in a particularly scandalous divorce case, cabled The Times newspaper from India to make public their engagement. Born Emilia Francis Strong, she married at the age of 21, Mark Pattison, one of the greatest Victorian scholars, who was 27 years older. The marriage was painfully unhappy which the book reflects using unpublished letters but her second marriage was infinitely more successful. She was a personality in her own right and had an energetic political life, championing exploited women workers and, moreover, was one of the foremost art historians of her time with her work on the French 18th century still required reading. 7 plates. *** NOT EX LIB ***
