Lady Dilke was remembered as the woman who, when Sir Charles Dilke was cited as co-respondent in a particularly scandalous divorce case, cabled The Times newspaper from India to make public their engagement. Born Emilia Francis Strong, she married at the age of 21, Mark Pattison, one of the greatest Victorian scholars, who was 27 years older. The marriage was painfully unhappy which the book reflects using unpublished letters but her second marriage was infinitely more successful. She was a personality in her own right and had an energetic political life, championing exploited women workers and, moreover, was one of the foremost art historians of her time with her work on the French 18th century still required reading. 7 plates. *** NOT EX LIB *** Price:

Not much is known of the Lyttelton family during the 19th century but the author has had access to a large mass of unpublished papers belonging to Lord Cobham, the present head of the family, and has recreated a picture of a remarkable group of people. Two figures stand out in this family tapsetry : Sarah Lady Lyttelton and her son George, 4th Lord Lyttelton. She was governess to Queen Victoria's children and he was Gladstone's brother-in-law. 3 family trees and 10 illustrations. Price:
