Internally very clean, tight and unmarked. A Very Good+ copy. Translated by Frances Frenaye. 591 pages. An historical novel regarded as an important work, with a central theme of the birth of Italy. The central figures are a river mill, its remarkable miller, Lazzaro, the miller's family, and the Po river, on whose banks the mill is anchored. The first part covers the period 1812-1848, when, after the brief convulsions of the Napoleonic regime, the city of Ferrara is again weakly governed as a Papal State with Austrian troops in the fortress. The second part carries the action from 1848 to 1872, from the short restoration of Austrian control over the Papal States to the early years of the United Kingdom of Italy. Price:
