1 Daniels, Barry V. Revolution in the Theatre - French Romantic Theories of Drama
Connecticut Greenwood Press 1983 0313224765 / 9780313224768 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine No Jacket
A near Fine unmarked copy (Fine apart from minor marks to front board). vii + 249 pages. 9 illustrations. The book as its title states is clear in meaning. Romanticism in France meant revolution in the theatre, and the date of this revolution, 25 February 1830, as Gautier notes in his 'History of Romanticism' 'remains engraved upon our past in blazing letters: the premiere of Hernani'. The majority of selections in this volume were written prior to 25 February 1830. Romanticism was delayed in France, both because of political factors - the Empire - and because of the strength of neo-classicism in general in French culture. The latter was especially true of the French theatre, which was dominated by the shadows of its first geniuses, Corneille, Racine, and Molière. Authors covered are Madame de Stael, Benjamin Constant, Stendhal, Charles-Augustin Sainte-Beuve, Victor Hugo, Emile Deschamps, Alfred de Vigny, Alexandre Dumas the Elder.
