Boston David R. Godine 1994 1567920012 / 9781567920017 First Edition Hard Cover Fine No Jacket
A Fine unmarked copy. First American edition. 481 pages. Portrait frontispiece. Translated from the Italian and French by Teresa Waugh. Marie Anne de Vichy-Chamrond, marquise du Deffand (1697-1780) was a famous hostess and patron of the arts. Her salon members were drawn from aristocratic society more than from literary circles, but did include Voltaire, Montesquieu, Fontenelle, Madame de Staal-Delaunay, and D'Alembert. After her return to Paris, at the insistence of friends, she engaged Mademoiselle de Lespinasse to help her in entertaining, but Lespinasse was later dismissed as she had become more popular than her patron with some guests. She corresponded with Horace Walpole for fifteen years, and who visited her in Paris several times. **** A HEAVY VOLUME OF 0.94 KILO UNPACKED WEIGHT WHICH MAY REQUIRE ADDITIONAL SHIPPING COST ****
