Nothing has previously been published on the activity that absorbed George Bernard Shaw from the 1890's until his death in 1950 - photography. Photography was perhaps Shaw's main private passion - second only to his love of being photographed. As well as being a devoted photographer, he also wrote numerous essays about photography, delivered many lectures on the subject, debated at meetings of photographic societies, and numbered several of the greatest photographers of the time among his friends. His own photographs - the major collection of which some 10,000 images is held by the London School of Economics - include self-portraits (of course), studies of friends and acquaintances including Mrs. Patrick Campbell, Sydney and Beatrice Webb, Rodin et al. This is the first anthology of Shaws writings on photography.
