Stansted has been a hunting lodge since medieval times and the book tells of the visits of Henry II, Richard Lionheart and King John, of the d;Aubigny and Fitzalan Earls of Arundel who lived there for 500 years, of Queen Elizabeth and Charles II, the Lumleys and the Earls of Scarborough who built the first house on the present site. There are accounts of the second Earl of Halifax and his mistress, a singer from Drury Lane, of the extraordinary Indian Nabob and his riches, of the famous converter of the Jews, Lewis Way, and his strange chapel which inspired the poet Keats.
