A Fine unmarked copy with VG dustjacket which has fading to spine. A biography of Robert Raikes (1735-1811), the English philanthropist, wealthy newspaper owner, prison visitor, church attender and family man who was concerned with the plight of the children in Gloucester. In 1780 he started a Sunday School where children would learn to read and to repeat the catechism, believing that illiteracy was the cause of much of the poor state in which the children lived.
