A near Fine unmarked copy. 361 pages. 28 illustrations. Leonore Cooke graduated B.A. in science from Cambridge, then trained as a teacher, after two years in East London, she went to Edinburgh to read medicine, and immediately after qualifying as a doctor she left for India to teach medical subjects in the Christian Medical College, Ludhiana. She was soon Professor of Anatomy and later Registrar in the college, and after 17 years there, she followed a call to join a Religious Community, to the Sisterhood of the Epiphany of the Oxford Mission in East Pakistan. She planned a small maternity hospital where she trained midwives and during this period experienced the war between East and West Pakistan, terminating in the formation of Bangladesh. After 20 years she returned to Britain, staying with the Community of St. Francis, ultimately transferring to it, and during her time with them, among other things, she spent 5 years in East London working with Bangladeshi immigrants, as Community Health doctor, translator and friend.
