His family were founder members of the British Communist move, ent in the 1920's and, as a penniless teenager at the height of the Depression, inspired by the hope of a better future, he took the boat to Leningrad in search of work. Quickly finding a job in a factory and performing to his workmates, he discovered his vocation as an entertainer, soon he was singing and playing in a popular jazz orchestra.
