First UK edition. Gold title on green boards which have a mark to front and indentations to lower front and back but no discernible wear. Internally there is light foxing to closed edges with some light foxing to some page edges and a Times Library stamp to rear pastedown, else clean and unmarked with no inscriptions. A Good + copy of this SCARCE TITLE. The American author (1906-1977) was a foremost writer in the Golden Age of Detective fiction who lived and wrote in England in the 1930's and 1940's. This novel featuring Doctor Gideon Fell, is of the discovery of three unknown letters from Wilkie Collins to Charles Dickens, concerning an unfinished novel 'The Dead Man's Knock' which includes a death in a locked room, a scenario played out in fact in the Virginia college grounds.
