1 Chambers, Peggy A Doctor Alone - A Biography of Elizabeth Blackwell the First Woman Doctor 1821 - 1910
London The Bodley Head 1956 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
Gilt title on grey boards which are clean and unmarked with no wear. Internally there is a prize bookplate to front pastedown, foxing to closed edges and to endpapers and a little to some early and later pages else clean, tight and unmarked. Dustjacket by Biro has two small closed tears and is not price clipped. 8 illustrations. Born in Bristol in 1821, Elizabeth was the most remarkable daughter in a remarkable family. When she was still a child, the family moved to America; and for a while Elizabeth taught in the Southern States - an experience which made her an active slavery abolitionist. Once she had formed her resolve to study medicine, she applied to every medical college in America, but only one was prepared to accept her - Geneva College, New York State - from which she graduated with honours. She had to fight against social ostracism and medical prejudice all her life to establish her position as a woman doctor, opened a dispensary in the New York slums, and when her sister Emily qualified also as a doctor, they founded the New York Infirmary for Women and Children. After giving valuable service during the American Civil War, Elizabeth returned to England, where she gained a great reputation, and numbered Florence Nightingale and Sir James Simpson among her friends. **** NOT EX LIB ****
