1 Davies, D.R. In Search of Myself - The Autobiography of D.R. Davies
London Geoffrey Bles 1961 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good
A near Fine unmarked copy (Fine apart from a small name and date to front endpaper) with VG+ dustjacket. D.R. Davies was born in a mining village in Glamorgan and grew up under the grim shadow of poverty but his indomitable mother and crippled father kept alive their Christianity. In his life he was a miner, a tramp, Unitarian theological student, Congregational minister and a popular Socialist preacher, but in 1928 he resigned his ministry, for he had worked his belief to its logical conclusion - the separation of Christianity and the Church. After a period of near destitution he was picked as a leader for the New Britain Movement by the dominating and magnetic Serb, Mitrinovic. Then came 10 years study, public meetings and controversy before his interest in Marxist Socialism helped him break the connection, his secular idealism was almost drained dry, his second marriage was grinding towards failure, and he resolved to commit suicide. He plunged into the sea but suddenly realised the enormity of his action, and that moment found God and faith in himslef, and shortly afterwards was received into his true spiritual home, the Church of England, and ordained by Archbishop Temple. **** NOT EX LIB ****
