Ede, Mary Arts and Society in England Under William and Mary London Stainer and Bell 1979 0852494807 / 9780852494806 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Near Fine Signed by Author SIGNED BY MARY EDE AND HER HUSBAND JOHN 'WITH BEST WISHES' , 30/7/88 to front endpaper. A near Fine unmarked copy with near Fine dustjacket. 218 pages. 94 illustrations. Dr. Ede explores the complex interaction of political, religious and artistic changes in England following the Revolution in 1688. The book examines the European influence in not only the higher arts but also on the humbler domestic side; the country cottage as well as the stately mansion-; the broadside ballad and popular woodcut as well as the opera and court portraiture. During this period the Crown lost its predominance in patronage to both Parliament and the aristocracy; publishing and music came increasingly under the influence of an assertive middle class. There were no dramatic artistic changes but the foundations of later 18th century achievements were laid, often under the influence of ideas or craftsmen newly arrived from the Continent. Price:
