1 Wordsworth, Elizabeth Illustrations of the Creed
London Longmans, Green 1894 Hard Cover Very Good Near Fine
Gilt title on blue cloth boards which have a small indentation to front and marks to back but no wear. Internally there is age darkening to top edge, a neat contemporary inscription to half title page, closed tears to three pages of the preface (badly opened), all other pages are unopened, else a clean, tight and unmarked copy of this uncommon work. Second edition. xxii + 333 pages + 16 page publisher's catalogue of Theological Literature. Dame Elizabeth Wordsworth (1840-1932) was the great-niece of the poet William Wordsworth, the daughter of Christopher Wordsworth, Bishop of Lincoln, and the sister of John Wordsworth, Bishop of Salisbury and Christopher Wordsworth, a liturgical scholar. She was the founder in 1878 of Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford as a college for female undergraduates. The book is 'an attempt to bridge over what is often a very wide gulf between the daily life of the educated or partially educated, especially in the middle classes, and those dogmas which seem to many persons to exist (if they exist at all) at a distance so remote as practically to have little or no effect on their habitual conduct'. The addresses were originally given in the year 1885-6 to a class of young-lady students at Oxford, which will account for some local and a good many literary allusions.
