Born into a dysfunctional and impoverished Nottingham family in 1920, the author left school at the age of 15 with no qualifications to work as an errand boy for the local council. In 1939 he enlisted in the army and served throughout World War II in England and France. On leaving the Army he pursued his education, eventually achieving the highest academic awards and becoming a respected advisor to many governments including the UK, Republic of Ireland, Kenya, Malaysia, Sudan, Tanzania and Sri Lanka. A fascinating and inspiring autobiography spanning 70 years and three continents and of how one man overcame poverty, social deprivation and a poor education to eventually succeed in all he chose to do. 14 illustrations.
