1 Salvoni, Elena and Fawkes, Sandy Elena - A Life in Soho
London Quartet Books 1990 0704327457 / 9780704327450 First Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
An unmarked copy apart from a small tear of a quarter of an inch to the centre of 3 pages (see images), however the text is still readable. Dustjacket is VG+ and has a little creasing to the top edge and is not price clipped. Born in 1920, Elena grew up among the Italian community in Clerkenwell, an area of mixed immigrants, grinding poverty and enfolding family love. She left school at 14 and worked in the cosmopolitan microcosm that is Soho. During the war, she became a waitress at the Cafe Bleu, later moving to Bianchi's: her 30 years there were sadly to end in feelings of bitterness and disappointment which were only alleviated by an invitation to take refuge and charge at L'Escargot, where her reputation as one of the greatest restaurant managers of the 1980's concluded. Over the years, Soho's diverse and famous habitues have become her friends: Rocky Marciano, Michael Redgrave, Ella Fitzgerald, Albert Finney, Steven Spender, Vincent Price to name a few. Her daily encounters with now legendary figures provide a multitude of anecdotes, such as Maria Callas refusing to be parted from her mink.

2 Fawkes, Sandy Killing Time
London Peter Owen 1977 0720605148 / 9780720605143 First Edition Hard Cover Fine Near Fine
A Fine unmarked copy with near Fine dustjacket which is not price clipped. 180 pages. 11 illustrations. On 7 November 1974, a man and a woman met in a bar in Atlanta, Georgia, USA - the woman was Sandy Fawkes, a British journalist newly arrived in America and ignorant of its ways and its geography. The man was Paul John Knowles who was approaching the end of a 20,000 mile journey through almost every state of America - and wherever he went he killed. The book is the true account of one of the biggest mass-murderers of modern times told by the woman who nearly became his nineteenth victim. As they drove to Florida, Sandy Fawkes was Knowles's lover - but she knew him as Daryl Golden, the quiet well mannered businessman with the smart clothes and fast car. He did tell her that 'I am going to be killed for something that I have done in the past' but not what it was that he had done, only that it was on tapes deposited with his lawyer.
