Gilt and decoration on brown cloth boards which has just a little wear to spine head and tail and a few small marks to boards but generally clean. Internally there is a contemporary signature and address to front endpaper, light foxing to a few pages and to closed fore edge and some creasing to corner tips of some pages. vi + 313 pages. 4 photographic illustrations tipped in. Overall a Good + copy. Pages 3-44 are a lengthy introduction by H.G. Wells which is a celebration of his late wife's life and work and which is a very moving account and a memorial to her. This is followed by 21 of his wife's stories and poems selected by him.

Gilt title on blue cloth boards which are clean and unmarked with just light wear to spine tail and corner tips. Internally some light foxing to endpapers and a small ink mark to one page else clean, tight and unmarked. Dustjacket has some staining and loss to spine but all text is present. A very heavy, large format volume of 897 pages bound in thick boards with reinforced hinges which deals with the whole history of human life and all that lesser life on and in the land, in the sea and the air. The whole scope of life in its origin, development, mutations, and variations here finds careful and lucid explanation; from the earliest to the latest of living creatures; from the tiniest ultra-microscopic fragment of life to the greatest of the earth's denizens. Every stage in the evolution and life of mankind is adequately covered, from embryo to final decay. Arranged into nine books and profusely illustrated.
