First UK edition. A Very Good unmarked copy which has a small corner crease to one page and a minor central crease to first few pages else clean and unmarked. Dustjacket is complete with just a touch of wear to top edge. Translated from the French by Anthony White. The Polish born author recounts his story of life when the Nazis occupied his native Warsaw, when he and his family were driven into the ghetto, his vow to survive the cruelty, outwit the 'beasts with men's faces' and to fight, becoming Mietek, king of the ghetto black market. Risking his neck to secure food and harbour for his family so that they might stave off death, but his luck ran out and he and his family were transported to Treblinka and he no longer was able to protect his loved ones. They were herded into the gas chambers, while he was forced to pile still warm corpses into the trenches. His testimony is shocking and exceptional in that he escaped, alone and bitter he arrived in New York in 1947 to build a new life, later moving to France with his wife and four children, where tragedy once again strikes as his wife and children are trapped and burnt to death in a forest fire. A profoundly moving account of the trials and tribulations of one man, and a testimony to the infinite resilience of the human spirit in the face of wickedness and misfortune. **** NOT BOOK CLUB **** **** NOT EX LIB ****
