1 Gaunt, William Court Painting in England from Tudor to Victorian Times
London Constable 1980 0094618704 / 9780094618701 First Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good
A near Fine unmarked copy which has a quarter inch cut to the top margin of some early pages possibly by a manufacturing fault with VG+ dustjacket which is not price clipped. 226 pages. 150 black and white and 16 colour illustrations. Portaiture began as we know it in Tudor times and the book spans three centuries from Holbein's great portrait of Henry VIII to Landseer's mournful Queen Victoria, seated on a pony held by John Brown. Most of the chief artists of any period - Hilliard, Lely, Kneller, Cooper, Zoffany, Van Loo, Ramsay, Gainsborough - were connected with the Court, and had a title such as 'The King's Limner' or 'Painter-in-Ordinary to the Queen', and a salary. This authoritative work provides a comprehensive history of court painting and the royal painters.
