1 Warner, Geoffrey Pierre Laval and the Eclipse of France
London Eyre and Spottiswoode 1968 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good
A near Fine unmarked copy (Fine apart from a small name to front endpaper) with dustjacket which has fading to spine and is not price clipped. xviii + 461 pages. 26 plates. 3 maps. At 23 minutes past noon, on Monday 15 October 1945, in the courtyard at Fresnes prison, Pierre Laval, having unsuccessfully tried to poison himself, was shot by firing squad. 'I love France', he had said on many occasions, but in 1945 he represented, for most Frenchmen, those forces which had brought about not only their defeat, but their humiliation. Vincent Auriol, later the first President of the Fourth Republic, wrote 'Everything about him is black, his clothes, his face, his soul'. A major biographical study of Laval and of his role in the history of France between 1931 - when he became Prime Minister for the first time, and when France was still the dominant military power in Europe - and 1944 when, at the time of the Liberation, the position was very different, with political anarchy and administrative chaos, and summary justice. **** A HEAVY VOLUME OF 0.93 KILO UNPACKED WEIGHT WHICH MAY REQUIRE ADDITIONAL SHIPPING COST ****
