The transformation of a young cockney, whose only playground was the Old Kent Road area of London in the early 1930's, to a film actor, now a man of letters, is the theme of the first part of the author's autobiography. His powers of recollection are almost photographic in detail and he takes us back on a journey to the 1930's and 1940's. To an impoverished childhood, pain and exaltation at Eltham College, his entrance to drama school, his success as teenage actor, appearing in some 30 wartime films, with such as John Mills and Petula Clark, and the volume ends with his entry into Guys Hospital as an aspiring student. The author has been a doctor, dentist, poet, painter, sculptor, writer as well as having been an actor.
