Herbert Leslie Greener (1900-1974) , journalist, author and egyptologist, was born in Capetown, South Africa, only son of a British Army captain. He was educated in England, attended Sandhurst, served as an officer in the Indian Army, married the New Zealand artist Alice Gwendoline Rhona Mackenzie, and worked as a journalist in New Zealand and Australia. He studied in Paris, where he learned to paint well enough to be hung in the Salon exhibitions, taught art and French at Alexandria, Egypt, and after further study was employed as a epigraphist by the University of Chicago for ten years, and where his second marriage began. In 1936 he and his wife moved to Sydney, Australia and in 1940 he joined the Australian Imperial Force and was sent to Malaya, eventually becoming Intelligence Officer of the ill starred Eighth Division captured at Singapore, and interned at Changi camp. After the war he returned to Australia and then, after the death of his second wife, returned to Egypt later retiring to Hobart, Tasmania where he married again. The book is the recollections of his young life from his 'alter ego'. Delightful illustrations in the text by the author.
