London Folio Society 1976 Hard Very Good Very Good

Mary Henrietta Kingsley (1862-1900) was the daughter and oldest child of traveller and writer George Kingsley and Mary Bailey, and was the niece of novelists Charles Kingsley and Henry Kingsley. After receiving an inheritance she decided to visit Africa, landing in Sierra Leone in August 1893, to collect the material she would need to complete a book that her father had started on the culture of the people, the book being first published in 1897. At that time the only women travelling to Africa were the wives of missionaries. She lived with local tribes who taught her the skills needed to survive in the jungle, where her medical training as a nurse was of great use.
