A naer Fine copy with a name to front pastedown else very clean, tight and unmarked with dustjacket which has some wear to edges and a few very small closed tears. First US edition. 251 pages. 14 illustrations. The first biography of Charles Francois Gounod, composer of Faust, who was derided in his time but influenced every French composer that followed him. Gounod, desperately aware of his own unworthiness, yearned after mysticism; he admired Palestrina and Mozart, strove towards purity in music, found himself pursuing a career instead, deserting his benefactors, the Devil his conscience. A hypocrite who justified his treachery and sought expiation through religious music, Gounod found his fortune at the end of a party joke when he devised a melody set to a Bach invention, Ave Maria. Still it is in his music that Mephistopheles most tempts us, as it did Gounod.
