The discovery of the double helical structure of DNA by James Watson and Francis Crick in 1953 revolutionised our view of life, of the genetic structure of living things; but it was, in a sense, only the first door to be opened. A number of mysteries remained, among them the question of how the information contained in our genes is translated into growth; what, in other words, was the machinery that converted genetic information into living substance? This discovery, transfer RNA, was the great scientific achievement of the author at Harvard, but it was not Mahlon's only achievement.
