Internally there is a contemporary name and date else very clean, tight and unmarked. ix + 521 pages. Top edge gilt. The authorised English translation of 'L'Homme Qui Rit'. Not dated but contemporary neat name and date of Aug. 1898. Catalogue bound in to rear.

Gilt title and decoration on green cloth boards which have a thin line of indentation to front and gentle bumping to corner tips with no wear. Internally very clean, tight and unmarked. Top edge gilt. Some pages unopened at bottom. xxii + 530 pages. (Probably an unread copy accounting for its well preserved condition). Uniform with The Romances of Victor Hugo. Photogravure frontispiece of a scene from the novel - 'The Prisoners' tissue guarded. First American translation. An attractive copy of Hugo's first novel started when he was aged 18 in 1820 but first published in 1823. **** A FAIRLY SCARCE EDITION ****

'Done into English by Eleanor and Augustine Birrell. Pictorial decorated boards of huntsman on horse riding through wood with eagle, in yellow with gilt title to spine. Boards have some light marks to front and just a touch of light wear to spine head and tail and to corner tips. Internally there is light foxing to pages else clean and tight. 8 original full page illustrations for this edition by H.R. Millar. Top edge gilt. Fore and lower edges uncut. The original of this story is to be found in Victor Hugo's Le Rhin (1842). The verse translation is the work of Charles Tennyson, Scholar of King's College, Cambridge. **** An attractive SCARCE TITLE ****
