1 Maritain, Jacques Christianity and Democracy
London Geoffrey Bles 1946 Hard Cover Very Good No Jacket
Silver title on black cloth boards which are clean with some minor marks to front and just a touch of light wear to lower front edge. Internally there are a few spots of foxing to endpapers and two pages have a very small mark to the lower margins not affecting text else clean, tight and unmarked. Second impression (first was 1945). The book was written in the summer of 1942, at a time when the outcome of the war could still seem very disquieting, and appeared in French early in the spring of 1943, at a time when, whatever acts of desperation or machiavellianism Germany might yet try, her defeat and that of her partners seemed certain. Maritain reviews the role of Christianity and democracy at that crucial time. **** NOT EX LIB ****

2 Maritain, Jacques Man and the State
London Hollis and Carter 1954 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
Black title on blue boards which are very clean and unmarked with no wear. Internally there is slight darkening to endpapers else very clean, tight and unmarked. A Very Good+ copy. Dustjacket is also VG+ and is not price clipped. Students of political theory are once again indebted to Jacques Maritain for penetrating insights into the modern problems of the state. In this work will be found discussions on such matters as sovereignty, popular control of the State, the rights of man, democracy, Church and State and world government. These widely ranging subjects are all bound together by a first chapter in which much needed definitions are given to distinguish between the nation, the body politic, the State and the people. T.S. Eliot once called Maritain 'the most powerful force in contemporary philosophy' and there can be no doubt that this important book strengthens his reputation.
