The famous film maker, son of the even more famous painter, who appeared in many of his father's paintings, has written this autobiography with all the charm and delicacy one would expect. His story begins in late 19th century France, a world dominated by his father and Gabrielle, the woman who cared for him and who influenced him most of all, and to whom he owed his first sight of Guignol and the Theatre Montmartre. 'She taught me to see the face behind the mask and the fraud behind the flourishes', in other words, to create the movies which are the most alive in the history of cinema, nearly 40 of them, from Nana through La Grande Illusion and La Regle du Jeu to The River. Along the way Renoir portrays the places where he has lived and worke in Europe, Hollywood and India, his first eperiences as a First World War soldier, then as a pilot. 63 photographs.
