First Forum Books edition, First Printing November 1946. The author is Matthew Phipps Shiel (1865-1947) who was born in Montserrat, West Indies, although from 1885 he lived and wrote in Britain. The Purple cloud was first published in 1901as a novel but had appeared earlier that year, abridged, as a serial in the Royal Magazine, and was highly praised by H.P. Lovecraft. It is regarded as an early future history science fiction work. The story is of Adam Jeffson's expedition to the North Pole on board The Boreal, and who remembers his meeting with a man who claimed that the universe is a place of strife between vague 'powers', 'The White' and 'The Black', for dominance. Throughout the events of the polar journey, he gradually discovers that his course has been guided by these forces. He finds a huge, clear lake of spinning water with a rock island inlaid with inscriptions. Upon seeing this, Jeffson falls into a faint. When he returns to his camp he, along with his dogs, feels nauseous after having smelled a peculiar peach-like odour. He also notices a moving purple cloud, spreading in the far heavens. During the progress of his journey, he discovers dead animals, all without the slightest sign of injury, and he gradually learns of the death of his entire crew onboard the Boreal. He sets off alone on the ship and everywhere he lands he finds everone dead, and develops a madness at being alone in the world and burns down cities - Paris, London, San Francisco. He sets himself a task of building a palace on an island and later whilst going to Constantinople, which he also burns, finds a naked girl who has no knowledge of the world. **** NOT EX LIB **** Price:
