A Fine unmarked copy in red quarter cloth with inset picure to front board. A large format volume of 223 pages. Illustrated with original illustrations by Shirley Felts and contemporary paintings. Mary Russell Mitford was born in Hampshire in 1787 and her village sketches, which after a time were augmented by memories from her childhood and stories from further afield, were first published in book form, in five volumes, between 1824 and 1832. But though her work was successful, it did not make her rich, and when increasing ill health obliged her to give up writing, Queen Victoria herself contributed to a private fund formed to supplement Miss Mitford's Civil List pension.
