1 Maximus, Valerius Memorable Doings and Sayings - Books I-V
Cambridge, Massachusetts Harvard University Press 2000 0674995414 / 9780674995413 Hard Cover Fine Very Good
A Fine unmarked copy. Gold title on red cloth boards with VG dustjacket. 547 pages. Loeb Classical Library. Edited and translated by D.R. Shackleton Bailey. Latin and English text. Valerius Maximus compiled his handbook of notable deeds and sayings during the reign of Tiberius (AD 14-37). The collection was admired in antiquity and has recently been attracting renewed scholarly attention. Yet to date there has been no modern English translations. Valerius arranges his instructive examples in short chapters each focused on a particular virtue, vice, religious practice, or traditional custom - including Omens, Dreams, Anger, Cruelty, Bravery, Fidelity, Gratitude, Friendship, Parental Love. His book is an interesting source of nformation on Roman attitudes towards religion and moral values in the first century.
