7 Blunt, Wilfred John Christie of Glyndebourne
London Geoffrey Bles 1968 071380212X / 9780713802122 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Near Fine 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall
A Near Fine unmarked copy (Fine apart from a small marks to fore and lower edges) with near Fine dustjacket which is not price clipped. xiii + 303 pages. 16 illustrations. 2 page genealogical chart. John Christie (1882-1962) was an English landowner and producer. He was the founder of the Glyndebourne Opera House and the Glyndebourne Festival Opera at his home at Glyndebourne, near Lewes in Sussex in 1934. An only child, he was sent to Eton, where he later returned as a member of the Science staff. His 16 years as a schoolmaster were interrupted by two years of active service in the First World War, when he won a Military Cross. After the death of his grandfather his father gave him use of Glyndebourne, an ancient but much renovated country house in the Sussex downs which soon became an absorbing interest to him. In 1930, his father, who had always been mentally unstable, died leaving his Devonshire properties away from the family; this caused a celebrated lawsuit in which John Christie and his mother were successful. A year later John married Audrey Mildmay, the opera singer, with whose help he created the Opera Festival which, in spite of some initial scepticism, has triumphantly succeeded and is now an accepted institution in the pattern of English life.

This richly entertaining book celebrates the 50th anniversary, in 1984, of the founding of Glyndebourne Festival Opera. It is a splendid mixture of historical survey, personal anecdote, criticism and comedy. Above all, emanating from every piece is a genuine affection for Glyndebourne and its founder John Christie, admiration for its style and musical standards, gratitude for opportunities given to artists, conductors, designers and audiences, for musical experiences and pleasure, and sheer delight - a recurring refrain of the book - in the atmosphere of the place. EMI Records advertisement for Glyndebourne Festival Opera 1934-1959 - memories of the first 25 years, HMV Record - is loosely inserted.

The concept of the autocratic Parson-Squire has now passed into history and was a unique phenomenon peculiar to one definable era in the evolution of the English Church. William Marriott Smith-Marriott was typical and the story of his life is recounted on the 150th anniversary of his induction as rector of Horsmonden. The family exercised spiritual and temporal rule over their parish for two centuries (it is only 30 years since the last Smith-Marriott rector died). Their influence over Horsmonden was cast from their surprisingly secluded church and their strange rectory manor-house. **** NOT EX LIBRARY ****

19 Gray, James S. Victorian and Edwardian Sussex from Old Photographs
London B. T. Batsford 1971 0713401311 / 9780713401318 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Near Fine 4to - over 9" - 12" tall
A near Fine copy which has a small name to front endpaper and a few specks to fore edge with near Fine dustjacket which is price clipped. 170 old photographs. In the six decades covered by the book Sussex was a county where oxen, gleaners and smocked farm labourers were still to be seen in the fields, where croquet was played in crinolines and stoolball survived, where windmills abounded and a tide mill worked 16 hours a day, where turnpikes interrupted the traffic's flow and in which the London Brighton and South Coast Railway was in its heyday. These are some of the subjects illustrated amongst the 170 photographs, representative of 60 towns, villages and country places, each accompanied by commentaries.

20 Guilmant, Aylwin Bygone Steyning, Bramber and Beeding
Chichester, Sussex Phillimore 1988 0850336694 / 9780850336696 First Edition Hard Cover Fine Fine 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall
A Fine unmarked copy with Fine dustjacket. 162 illustrations with map endpapers. The three villages of Steyning, Bramber and Beeding are now quiet backwaters and a large part of their present charm is that they preserve much of the atmosphere of a past age. Yet, paradoxically, the three adjacent communities were relatively much busier in the past. Bustling river trade on the Adur combined with their position as centres for a thriving agricultural community, with markets and fairs, a castle, a priory, a great collegiate church and, by the tenth century, even a mint; all of these made them places of importance in the Middle Ages.
