Stories on Paper and Glass - Pioneering Photography at National Geographic, Bendavid-Val, Leah
4 Bendavid-Val, Leah Stories on Paper and Glass - Pioneering Photography at National Geographic
Washington National Geographic 2001 0792264347 / 9780792264347 First Edition Hard Cover Fine Very Good 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall
A Fine unmarked copy with VG+ dustjacket. A large format volume of 256 pages. National Geographic published its very first photograph in July 1890 - an event that down the line would cause a bit of furore at the Society, where a few scholars continued to maintain that photographs had no place in a scientific journal. Fortunately 19th century ideas of scholarly publication were swept away in a growing flood of images. Many of the 250 photographs in the book have never been published before. Selected from the Society's vast image Collection, they range from all over the world and take us from pioneering days when cameras were cumbersome novelties or rich men's toys up to the end of the legendary career of Gilbert Hovey Grosvenor, son-in-law of the Society's second president, Alexander Graham Bell. An inspired editor, publisher, photographer, and collector in his own right. Grosvenor retired from National Geographic in the 1950'safter more than half a century as its editor. This book is a tribute to his career. PLEASE NOTE: A HEAVY VOLUME OF 1.78 KILO UNPACKED WEIGHT WHICH WILL REQUIRE ADDITIONAL SHIPPING COST

Magnum Cinema - Photographs from 50 Years of Movie-Making, Bergala, Alain (introduction by)
5 Bergala, Alain (introduction by) Magnum Cinema - Photographs from 50 Years of Movie-Making
London Phaidon Press 1998 0714837725 / 9780714837727 Soft Cover Fine Fine 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall
A Fine unmarked copy. A large format volume of 360 pages. The photographers associated with Magnum have worked with movie-makers since its creation nearly 50 years ago. Robert Capa, one of the founders od what has become the world's most prestigious picture agency, had many friends in the film business - including Ingrid Bergman, Humphrey Bogart, Billy Wilder and, particularly John Huston - which gave him, and through him other Magnum photographers, access to the charmed world of Hollywood. The connection with the film world has continued to the present day and widened to include movie-makers all over the world. The resulting on and off-set photographs gathered together for the first time in this beautifully presented book include intimate portraits of such screen legends as Marilyn Monroe, Clark Gable, James Dean and Clint Eastwood, as well as of outstanding directors, including Alfred Hitchcock, Carol Reed, François Truffaut and Andrei Tarkovsky. The roll call of photographers is equally distinguished - Eve Arnold, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Josef Koudelka, Eugene Smith and Dennis Stock, for example. Lewes, East Sussex The Book Guild 2000 1857764595 / 9781857764598 First Edition Hard Cover Fine Fine 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall
A Fine unmarked copy with Fine dustjacket. A large format volume of 161 pages. 256 photographs. Douglas Dickins links three generations in describing his life of woldwide travel and photography. He pays tribute to a father whose life was spent in the Indian Army and a grandfather who served as a Royal Navy surgeon in feudal Japan and then settled as a barrister in Yokohama. But Dickins has plotted his own routes to other fascinating parts of the world, and he provides penetrating and humorous insights into countries as diverse as the former Soviet Union, Mexico, Cambodia, Bali, Madagascar and Pakistan. What makes this collected travelogue a true treasure is that it is lavishly illustrated with the author's own photographs, which form only a small part of the photo library of the world that he has amassed, and now runs as a commercial concern. 1.6 Kilo
