Gilt title and blue and gilt floral decoration to spine with gilt title and blue, black and yellow pictorial to fron on brown cloth boards. Boards are very clean and unmarked with just the smallest touch of wear to one lower corner tip. Internally there is a copperplate ink prize award inscription and date March 31st/11 to front endpaper, a little light foxing to the first and last few pages,and sporadically to a few other pages else very clean, tight and unmarked. All edges gilt. viii + 301 pages. Frontispiece, tissue guarded, and 3 other illustrations (bound in a different page from the index). Not dated but is the same as Nelson's 1886 edition but this is probably the 1904 edition. A most well kept copy. From the Preface ' The object which I have had before me in writing the following tale, has been to show the distinction between the intellectual and the spiritual, and the insufficiency of mental powers, even though they be of a high order, either to render their possessor wise unto salvation, or to make him a fit instrument to accomplish a lofty mission amongst men.'

The editor of this wide ranging anthology has been collecting material for this book for 30 years, and has set the age limit of its authors at 16. George Orwell as an imperialist patriot, Virginia Woolf making fun of feminism and T.S. Eliot as the author of an adventure story set in the South Seas are some of the literary surprises. There are drawings by Bernard Shaw, David Jones and Anthony Powell as well as illustrated short stories by Wyndham Lewis and Evelyn Waugh, which have never appeared before. H.G. Wells's novel 'The Desert Daisy' is printed here in full and there is an extract from 'Folthy Lucre' by Beryl Bainbridge - both completed when they were 13 years old. The author, whose own illustrations are based on close observation at Perth Zoo, has written a children's story around this delightful little creature.

She went out of service in the 1960s and lay in a semi derelict state for almost 2 decades but after an extensive rebuild she was returned to service on Lake Thun in 1992.

Lance. All edges gilt. The author is William Gordon Stables (1840-1910) a retired naval surgeon and children's author, and this novel was first published in 1895. It is set in Scotland and tells of student and university life and the sea. A most decorative and well kept volume. Binding is tight with no cracking of hinges. 16 full size colour plates are very clean and bright with numerous other illustrations in the text (of which one page has been neatly coloured in) by many illustrators including Stanley Lloyd, Topham, Joanne Ingall. Not dated but British Library has this as 1930.
