Two Studies in Crime - The Murder of Lord William Russell and The Murder of Julia Wallace, Bridges, Yseult
4 Bridges, Yseult Two Studies in Crime - The Murder of Lord William Russell and The Murder of Julia Wallace
London Macmillan 1970 0333113330 / 9780333113332 Hard Cover Very Good Very Good 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall
A Very Good+ unmarked copy with no inscriptions which has light foxing to closed edges. Dustjacket is VG+ and is price clipped. 268 pages. First published in 1959. When Willliam Herbert Wallace was brought to trial for the murder of his wife Julia in 1931, certain peculiarities of the crime recalled the killing of Lord William Russell by his young Swiss valet almost a century before. In 1840 the underlying cause had been money, but in the case of Julia Wallace the motive may well have been more subtle than any yet suggested. By painstaking research, Yseult Bridges has succeeded in discovering fresh facts concerning Wallace's life and career which enable her to throw new light on the case.

As the girl stares at him she remembers her mother's cries as he beat her and how he laughed as he played his favourite game of throwing knives at them. As the girl grows up she is haunted by an undefinable fear, terror and obsession and her condition worsens after she marries, repeatedly attempting suicide and develops severe psychological disorders, manifesting in multiple personalities. After two years of intensive hypnosis therapy to integrate her other selves and to unveil the horrors of the day her father was murdered there is much debate over the issue of false versus fake recovered memories.

The Diary of Jack the Ripper, Harrison, Shirley
17 Harrison, Shirley The Diary of Jack the Ripper
New York Hyperion 1993 1562827049 / 9781562827045 First Edition Hard Cover Fine Fine 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall
FIRST US edition, FIRST PRINTING. A Fine uninscribed copy with red title on quarter black cloth with black boards. Dustjacket is also Fine and not price clipped. 323 pages. There have been many theories as to the identity of Jack the Ripper and in this book the author believes that the answer may lie in the recently discovered diary found in Liverpool, England which is signed 'Yours truly, Jack the Ripper'. In it are grisly details of the murders of 1888-1889 and many clues that identify the murderer as James Maybrick, a cotton merchant from Liverpool who died in 1889 of suspected arsenic poisoning. In another celebrated case of the day Maybrick's wife Florie was accused of his murder but, as we read in the diary, his death was probably the result of his arsenic addiction. The diary is the subject of controversy and a report questioning it's authenticity is included along with a rebuttal. Illustrated by photographs and drawings and a facsimile of the diary.

Project Octavio - The Story of the Howard Hughes Hoax, Irving, Clifford and Suskind, Richard
20 Irving, Clifford and Suskind, Richard Project Octavio - The Story of the Howard Hughes Hoax
London Allison and Busby 1977 0850311225 / 9780850311228 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Near Fine 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall
A near Fine unmarked copy (Fine apart from some light foxing to fore edge) with near Fine dustjacket which is not price clipped. vi + 378 pages. It was on a car ride from Palma harbour in Mallorca that Clifford Irving first mentioned the Newsweek article about billionaire Howard Hughes to his friend and fellow writer Richard Suskind. They joked about the idea of solving their money worries by collaborating with a publisher to produce a fake 'autobiography' of the world's most famous recluse; but it then occurred to them that the publisher need not be in on the secret, since Hughes would surely never break his cover merely in order to deny their authenticity. Of course it was merely a joke, just a wild idea. But the seed grew...the idea seemed perfect... there would be no real harm done since if they were discovered they could pay back all the money... Almost without trying the two men found themselves embarked upon the scheme they named 'Project Octavio', which was to become the most outrageous million dollar hoax of the century. Here for the first time, as fast-paced and exciting as any thriller, is Clifford Irving's own story of how the plan developed, step by step, from its madcap conception to the final confession.
