In spite of continued encroachment on their 22,000 square mile homelands by forest companies and non Indian settlers, little has changed in the Gitksan-Wet'suwet'en territories in British Columbia's northwest since the anthropologist Marius Barbeau wrote "It is still an Indian Country, effectively guarded, perhaps the last unconquered native stronghold of the red Man in North America". The native people have never surrendered jurisdiction over their lands, continuing to insist, in the face of governments and corporations that deny their very existence, that it is theirs to decide if, when, how and by whom their lands are to be exploited. Based on visits in 1988 and 1989 the author takes inside the Gitksan and We'suwet'en peoples' campaign for justice and recognition and how their struggle, which is taking place within Canada's legal system as well as on the land itself in a series of roadblocks. It interweaves the peoples' history, culture, beliefs and folklore presenting a rich blend of past and present.
