The Celluloid Mistress - or The Custard Pie of Dr. Caligari, Ackland, Rodney and Grant, Elspet
1 Ackland, Rodney and Grant, Elspet The Celluloid Mistress - or The Custard Pie of Dr. Caligari
London Alan Wingate 1954 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Good 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall
Minor marking to boards with no wear. Internally there is age darkening to page edges else a clean, tight and unmarked copy. Dustjacket has wear to edges and age darkening and is not price clipped. 264 pages. 24 illustrations. 'Jump to it and stop thinking about the pictures!' snarled the drill sergeant of Rodney Ackland's schooldays. But he never did stop thinking about 'the pictures'; he was, and has ruefully remained, screen-struck. The cinema was his first love, and though the theatre proved a kindlier mistress he pinned his hopes of heaven to the film studio door. At 19, Rodney Ackland had had three plays presented in London; at 22 he was the first modern dramatist to be hailed as 'the English Chekhov'. It was at this stage in his brilliant career that the studio door opened to him - whereafter it proceeded to behave as giddily as the revolving door in an early Chaplin comedy, whisking him in (variously disguised as screen-writer, actor, director) and briskly slapping him out again with disconcerting regularity over a period of 21 demented years. His recollections are set down by his close friend Elspeth Grant, film critic and columnist, are hilarious and star-spangled - packed with stories of such celebrities as D.W. Griffith, Alfred Hitchcock, Garbo, Greer Garson, Stewart Granger, James Mason, Leonora Corbett, Talulah Bankhead, Lillian Gish, Valerie Hobson, Wilfred Lawson, Michael Rennie and a host of others.

A Fine unmarked copy. xli + 191 pages. Illustrated throughout. Few cinematographers have had as decisive an impact on the cinematic medium as John Alton. Best known for his highly stylized film noir classics T-Men, He Walked by Night, and The Big Combo, Alton earned a reputation during the 1940's and 1950's as one of Hollywood's consummate craftsmen, known for his visual signature of crisp shadows and sculpted beams of light. The book, first published in 1949 and long out of print, remains one of the few truly canonical statements on the art of motion-picture photography, an unrivalled historical document on the workings of postwar American cinema.

Drag - A History of Female Impersonation On the Stage, Baker, Roger
14 Baker, Roger Drag - A History of Female Impersonation On the Stage
London Triton 1968 0363000143 / 9780363000145 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Good 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall
A near Fine copy which has an interesting inscription on front endpaper, a gentle bump to top corner tip else unmarked with dustjacket which has wear to edges, small repaired closed tears and is not price clipped. 256 pages. 92 illustrations. Drag is a theatrical term. It means women's clothes worn by men. And men have dragged their skirts across the stage since the beginnings of the theatre. In the playhouses of ancient China, Japan, Greece and in medieval England, theheroines were always young men. Sooner or later, however, womenexerted themselves and managed to appropriate the centre of the stage. In China it was not until the 20th century that this happened. In England it followed the Restoration of the monarchy in 1660. After that date, female impersonation in this country became a curiosity, a cue for comedy. For the first time the complexities of this extraordinary branch of theatrical technique are fully explored.

Fade Out - The Calamitous Final Days of MGM, Bart, Peter
18 Bart, Peter Fade Out - The Calamitous Final Days of MGM
London Simon and Schuster 1990 0671710605 / 9780671710606 First Edition Hard Cover Fine Very Good 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall
A Fine unmarked copy with VG+ dustjacket which is price clipped. First UK edition. It took Kirk Kerkorian nearly 20 years to wheel and deal to the point wher all that remained of MGM was the faint meow of Leo the Lion. But the descent of that once regal movie powerhouse was occasioned by no small amount of glamour, humour and greed. In the book we are treated to the big picture of a world-class studio over the past 20 years: a time of mergers and junk bond offerings, corporate musical chairs (with Kerkorian the only constant), the selling off of the film library (twice) and the company back lot. Even the historic sets and wardrobes for many of the MGM classics went on the block. Meanwhile MGM produced a succssion of movies: some of them successful, some sleazy, too many of them flops. This is not only a bizarre drama of colourful characters propelled across an Alice-in-Wonderland landscape littered with dashed hopes and bitter betrayals, but also a powerful story of corporate demolition in the 1980's.
