A Year in the Life of a Field, Allaby, Michael
1 Allaby, Michael A Year in the Life of a Field
Newton Abbot David and Charles 1981 0715378899 / 9780715378892 First Edition Hard Cover Fine Near Fine 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall
A Fine unmarked copy with near Fine dustjacket which is price clipped. 208 pages with photographic illustrations in the text. The ecologist and naturalist author has written this closely observed account of a year during which he studied a perfectly ordinary eight and a half acre farm field. The field differs little from thousands of such fields, which is why he chose to study it. As part of a Cornish farm the field has been in the hands of the same family for two centuries and has seen the same cycle year in, year out. It is not a wild field untouched by human hand but has undoubtedly been affected by the attempts of several generations to wrest a living from it. His sensitive and personal study explores the history of the field and its surroundings, its flora and fauna.

The Woodland Trust Book of British Woodlands, Allaby, Michael
2 Allaby, Michael The Woodland Trust Book of British Woodlands

A Fine unmarked copy with Fine dustjacket which is not price clipped. The book tells the story of our woodlands and describes the principal species of trees and the wildlife within them. The woodland ecosystem, the self sustaining and self-contained community of trees, plants, animals, insects and soil organisms, is examined. Woods produced by the older management systems of various kinds can still be seen and some are listed here, and facts and forces that lead to the clearance of woods are considered, with useful ideas on how these may be changed; and more immediately, on how to save any wood in ones's own area that may be under threat. Profusely illustrated with photographs and drawings by Rosemary Wise. **** NOT EX LIB ****

London Aurum Press 1992 1854102303 / 9781854102300 First Edition Hard Cover Fine Near Fine 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall
A Fine unmarked copy with a near Fine dustacket which is price clipped. 376 pages. Coloured map endpapers. An original and troubling account of the decline and fall of the world's second superpower and not since the harrowing accounts of the famines and purges of the Stalin era has so much new and damning information been brought together to expose the monumental brutality bhind the Soviet cause. The authors point out that the physical and human degradation was brought about by the force, not the failure, of the Communists' Utopian ambitions. Untrammelled power has produced an ecological and human disaster of biblical proportions, the consequences of which will be endured for generatins to come. The facts speak for themselves with 103 cities and a population of 70 million that suffer atmospheric pollution that exceeds safe levels by a factor of five, 75 % of surface water is contaminated by one or more pollutants, the rivers Volga and Don have been reduced to chemical sewers, two thirds of the Aral Sea has become an arid, sterile desert and the ecosystems of the Black and Caspian Seas may be damaged beyond repair. One lake near Chelyabinsk has been so polluted by waste from a military installation that it contained 24 times as much radioactive material as was released at Chernobyl. A most erudite work with map endpapers showing the problems and other maps in the text.
